Gardens of Peace Muslim Cemetery was formed in 1998 by the following four individuals on a charitable basis, for public benefit; their intention was to cater for the burial needs of the Muslim community in East London.
- Mehboob Patel
- Farouk Ismail
- Makbul Hussain Mubeen
- Gulem Mahomed Nadat
After much hard work planning permission for the first site, Elmbridge Road, was obtained and this site came into use as a cemetery in November 2002.
Five Oaks was acquired and started being used as a cemetery in 2017 and the Maylands site, acquired in 2007, has only come into use in September 2024 after a very lengthy process for securing planning permission.
The organisation was registered as a charity in 1998 with the Charity Commission.
It has gone from strength to strength, far exceeding the expectations of the founding members so that the charity now covers the burial needs for a significant section of the Muslim community in Greater London.
A number of other individuals contributed to the early stages of this project and continue to be involved in a number of pivotal roles in furthering the work of the charity. Not least of these individuals is Mohamed Omer MBE, who has responsibility for external affairs for the charity.
